With summer approaching, it is time to think about the way that your ducts are working. Why is that? Because energy loss due to leaky ducts in your central air conditioning system could be very costly. If there are leaks in your ducts, your system could be dumping cooled air into areas of your home that don’t need to be air conditioned, such as your attic and crawl spaces. On top of that, your system could be infiltrated by hot air, dust and smells from those areas which is not going to be pleasant.
Usually, the area in which you will find most leaks is around the HVAC unit itself. Since the pressure is greater near the unit, you are more likely to experience leaks forming there. Fortunately, however, those leaks are also usually the easiest to find. To find leaks further down the line, some detective work might be needed on your part, or you could hire someone to do the work for you. Either way, in the long run, it will save you a lot of money.
